The Burlington County Commissioners and the Burlington County Department of Human Services are organizing an event featuring suicide survivor Emma Benoit. The event includes a free screening of the documentary "My Ascension," which depicts Benoit's life and recovery journey. It is scheduled for Tuesday, November 19, from 5:30 PM to 8 PM at the Burlington County Library in Westampton.
Following the film, Benoit will engage in a discussion about teenage suicide and mental illness. The goal is to reduce stigma and offer hope to those facing depression, anxiety, or other mental health issues.
Burlington County Commissioner Director Felicia Hopson emphasized the importance of education on mental health. “Burlington County is committed to ending stigmas surrounding mental health conditions and we are proud to bring Emma and her inspiring message to our residents,” said Hopson. She added that discussing these topics can lead to better support for those who are suffering.
The documentary lasts approximately 88 minutes and tells the story of Benoit, who struggled with anxiety and depression before attempting suicide at age 16, which left her paralyzed. Her recovery story aims to help other teens dealing with similar challenges.
“Emma’s story is an extraordinary one and we are grateful she agreed to visit Burlington County to speak directly to our residents,” Hopson stated. She stressed that assistance is available for anyone in need.
Burlington County has been proactive in improving youth mental health services. In 2021, they declared themselves a Stigma-free County and initiated a campaign against misconceptions about mental health. This year saw the launch of Hope One For Youth, a mobile unit providing mental health education and support for young people.
“Mental health is an essential part of overall health and mental health challenges impact all ages,” said Hopson. The county remains dedicated to offering help, support, and hope for those facing mental health difficulties.
