Jennifer Khelil, DO, MBA, has been appointed as the executive vice president and chief clinical officer of Virtua Health. This health system is recognized as the largest in southern New Jersey. In her new capacity, Dr. Khelil will work closely with leadership teams to oversee clinical operations within the organization. Her focus will be on ensuring high reliability, quality and safety, and patient outcomes. Additionally, she will lead nursing, physician services, and medical affairs while also playing a key role in Virtua Health’s academic partnership with Rowan University.

Dr. Khelil has been part of Virtua since 2013 when she began as vice president of medical affairs before becoming chief medical officer in 2019. Her efforts have contributed significantly to the strategic growth of Virtua Health which now includes 1,400 employed physicians and a 3,000-person medical staff.
Reflecting on her time at Virtua Health, Dr. Khelil stated: “From the moment I joined Virtua 12 years ago, it was clear that I was part of a special organization unified in its mission to improve health and wellness for the people in our service area.” She looks forward to further advancing healthcare services for South Jersey residents.
Dr. Khelil has played an instrumental role in expanding graduate and undergraduate medical education programs at Virtua Health aimed at training more doctors. The number of residency programs has doubled since 2021 including various specialties such as surgery and psychiatry among others.
For undergraduate students, she helped establish opportunities for learning at Virtua campuses with more than 600 rotations completed so far.
In addition to fostering educational opportunities for students and faculty members alike, Dr. Khelil addresses holistic needs for all physicians employed by Virtua Health by providing resources aimed at tackling clinician burnout and improving work-life balance.
Throughout the pandemic period, Dr. Khelil emerged as a trusted figure imparting medical knowledge through various platforms including interviews with media outlets like the Philadelphia Inquirer earning recognition from NJBIZ among its “Healthcare Heroes” list for 2020.
Her educational background includes completing a fellowship organized by the Health Management Academy along with GE Healthcare while also being actively involved on boards such as Vantage Surgical Center among others.
Before joining Virtua Health she served as medical director across two organizations within South Jersey practicing internal medicine hospital medicine geriatrics alongside holding an MBA degree from Quinnipiac University along with a medical degree from what is now known today under Rowan-Virtua School Osteopathic Medicine name
