Burlington County is set to begin resurfacing work on 16 roads, spanning a total of 32 miles, as part of the County’s latest State Funded Overlay Plan. The project will impact roads in 17 towns, including Chesterfield, Mansfield, Springfield, and Westampton.
The Burlington County Commissioners approved a contract with Arawak Paving Co., based in Hammonton, for overlay and milling work on these roads. The $11.8 million contract is largely funded by annual aid from the New Jersey Department of Transportation.
“Burlington County is the largest county geographically in New Jersey with more than 500 linear miles of County roads, 411 County bridges and 700 culverts. Maintaining this infrastructure is one of the most important services our County performs, and every dollar of aid we receive is critical for that purpose,” stated Burlington County Commissioner Director Felicia Hopson. “We’re thrilled that the new repaving plan will start soon and will help ensure that Burlington County continues to have safe, quality roads.”
The project’s progress depends on weather conditions. Once work on one section is completed, the contractor will move to another road until all projects are finished.
“Repaving work is important because of all the wear and tear our roads receive,” said Commissioner Tom Pullion, liaison to the Department of Public Works and Division of Roads and Bridges. “Without proper maintenance, potholes and other problems can develop, including drainage problems. It’s more than just a nuisance; if it’s not addressed, it will eventually require a more significant and expensive fix.”
The roads scheduled for repaving under this program include Georgetown-Bordentown Road in Mansfield and Chesterfield Townships, Saylor's Pond Road in Springfield Township, Springside Rancocas Road in Westampton Township, Marne Highway in Mt. Laurel Township among others.
