The Burlington County Commissioners have appointed Connell Foley LLP as an independent special counsel to examine the 2024 General Election. This decision comes after reports of significant lines and wait times at various polling locations during the November General Election in Burlington County.
"Burlington county residents deserve accountability and appropriate action to ensure the 2024 election failures are not repeated, and our Board is committed to making sure that occurs," stated Burlington County Commissioner Director Felicia Hopson. "Appointing Connell Foley to conduct this review will provide our board and residents with an impartial assessment of what went wrong and actionable recommendations on improvements."
Connell Foley is tasked with reviewing all aspects of the 2024 election, including new voting machine deployment, voting district configurations, and poll worker training. The law firm will compile a report detailing their findings and suggestions for improvements.
Based in Roseland, Connell Foley is recognized as one of New Jersey's largest law firms. Its notable attorneys include former New Jersey Governor Richard Hughes, former U.S. District Court Chief Judge John W. Bissell, former Lt. Governor Kim Guadagno, and former Essex County Superior Court Judge Eugene J. Codey Jr.
The appointment aims to ensure impartiality in the review process, providing timely findings and recommendations.
Previously, the Commissioner Board requested reports from both the Superintendent of Elections and the Board of Elections regarding the General Election issues. However, these offices lacked the necessary expertise for a comprehensive review.
"We have decided that it is in the best interest of all parties that the review be performed by an independent third-party," said Hopson. "We expect the Burlington County Superintendent of Elections and Burlington County Election Board will cooperate fully and we are confident that Connell Foley will deliver a thorough report that will allow us to make informed decisions to address the November election problems."
