As the Burlington County Sheriff’s Office celebrates #BlackHistoryMonth, we remember the first African American Deputy U.S. Marshal west of the Mississippi River, Bass Reeves. Reeves was appointed a deputy after the American Emancipation and served for 32 years. During his time as a deputy, he arrested more than 3,000 felons, some of which were the most dangerous criminals of the time. His knowledge of the Native American language and lands made him one of the most valued deputies. Before retiring from law enforcement, at the age of 68, Reeves finished out his career as an officer for the Muskogee Police Department.
