The Burlington County Institute of Technology (BCIT) has completed significant renovations at its Medford campus, marking the first major updates since 2006. A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held on Monday to celebrate the $8 million improvements, which include expansions and upgrades to the welding and HVAC shops, as well as the creation of a new video game design lab.
Burlington County Commissioner Deputy Director Allison Eckel emphasized the importance of these enhancements for students' education and career readiness. "BCIT students are receiving quality educations that prepare them for high-tech careers, higher education and beyond," she stated. The upgrades are expected to benefit both students and the local economy by keeping Burlington County competitive in growing industries.
Dr. Ashanti Holley, superintendent of BCIT/Burlington County Special Services School District, highlighted that these changes will enable more students to enroll in popular programs. “This renovation is a major milestone for BCIT-Medford, expanding hands-on training in welding, HVAC and game design,” Dr. Holley said.
The ceremony was attended by several notable figures including Burlington County Commissioner Tyler Burrell, representatives from New Jersey Assemblywoman Andrea Katz's office, U.S. Senator Andy Kim's office, along with BCIT students and faculty.
The renovations were funded through a combination of state grants and county funding. A portion of a $16 million New Jersey grant designated for career and technical education expansion was used for most of the upgrades to the HVAC and welding shops under the Securing Our Children’s Future Bond Act.
Additionally, work continues on a $14 million project at BCIT’s Westampton campus involving substantial renovations supported predominantly by funds from the same bond act. Senator Troy Singleton noted that investing in vocational schools is beneficial for both students and local businesses seeking skilled workers.
Assemblywoman Andrea Katz also expressed support: “These investments in the facilities at both BCIT-Medford and BCIT-Westampton will benefit students from across Burlington County.”
