Twelve households in Burlington County are set to receive zero-interest loans for essential home repairs and improvements. This decision, made by the Burlington County Commissioners, involves nearly $300,000 in loans approved during a board meeting on December 27.

The initiative aims to help low- and moderate-income homeowners address health and safety issues without compromising their basic needs. "Every Burlington County resident deserves to live in a safe and comfortable home," stated Burlington County Commissioner Director Felicia Hopson. She emphasized that these loans would support homeowners while maintaining community standards.

These home improvement loans are among the first sanctioned since the program's overhaul to better meet the needs of families facing financial challenges. The revised scheme offers up to $25,000 in zero-interest, deferred payment loans for crucial home repairs or updates.

Under previous rules, loan recipients had to repay the full amount upon selling their homes or relocating. However, a new amendment allows for loan forgiveness if homeowners remain in their property for ten years.

Funding for this program comes from aid provided by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and is managed by the Community Development and Housing Division within the Burlington County Department of Human Services. Eligibility criteria include being a legal homeowner residing in the property as their primary residence, with income limits defined by HUD guidelines.

Additionally, emergency repair grants of up to $10,000 are available for urgent health or safety threats within homes. These grants have also been adjusted to be more effective through federal aid received under the American Rescue Plan Act.

Commissioner Hopson reiterated that "home ownership is essential to our communities" and highlighted efforts to keep housing affordable for all residents including low- and moderate-income workers, seniors, and new families.
