Virtua Health has initiated virtual care programs across several of its hospitals in collaboration with care.ai, a company known for its AI Smart Care Facility Platform. This development allows patients to consult with medical experts remotely through a secure camera system integrated into their hospital room's TV.
John Matsinger, DO, executive vice president and chief operating officer for Virtua Health, expressed enthusiasm about the new initiative: “Virtual care reflects Virtua’s commitment to innovate and evolve in support of outstanding patient experiences.” He further stated that this technology could become the industry standard over time.
The implementation began at Virtua Willingboro Hospital in April, while installations are underway at Virtua Voorhees Hospital and Virtua Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital. The phased installation approach aims for completion by early 2025, with Marlton and Mount Holly hospitals following suit. By the end of 2025, over 1,000 inpatient beds across five hospitals will have access to care.ai technology.
Michael Capriotti, MBA, senior vice president of integration and strategic operations at Virtua, explained how patients can control their participation in virtual consultations: “The patient can then decide whether to participate in a virtual consultation.” Patients also have the option to include family members or friends from afar in these conversations.
Dr. Matsinger highlighted the role of virtual team members who handle tasks like data entry and paperwork: “The virtual team members take on tasks like data entry and paperwork so that bedside doctors and nurses have more time with patients.”
Catherine Hughes, MSN, MHA, RN, NEA-BC, senior vice president and chief nursing executive for Virtua Health noted the program's potential impact on careers: “At a time when nurses and doctors are in high demand... we can stand apart by offering a diversity of roles.”
This initiative not only aims to enhance patient experience but also provides new career opportunities within the healthcare sector.
