Burlington County will introduce a new fleet of voting machines during the upcoming New Jersey Primary Election. Voters are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the new equipment and procedures before heading to the polls.
The machines, which include electronic ballot marking devices and tabulators, were first acquired by Burlington County in 2021 for early voting. The June 4 primary will mark their first use across all polling locations on Election Day.
To aid voters, a computer animation video has been created to demonstrate the process of voting with the new machines. This video can be viewed on the Burlington County Election Services page and provides a three-minute overview of how to vote using the new equipment. It is available at: https://www.co.burlington.nj.us/593/Election-Voter-Services.
Additionally, a ballot marking device and tabulator are on display at the County Corner site in Moorestown Mall every Saturday from 10 AM to 2 PM. This allows voters to inspect the machines and become familiar with their operation. Elections staff will be present to answer questions about the new machines and provide assistance related to voting procedures, including vote-by-mail and early voting options.
“The new machines are easy to use, and many Burlington County voters are already familiar with them from early voting,” said Burlington County Superintendent of Elections Dawn Marie Addiego. “For voters who haven’t participated in early voting, the machines will look different. Because of this change, we’re strongly encouraging voters to watch the video or visit the mall site to learn how the new machines work before heading to the polls on Election Day.”
The transition was prompted by the aging fleet of switch-based machines that had been used for 25 years. The new devices have been vetted extensively for simplicity and security, producing a voter-verifiable paper record for each ballot—an added security feature absent from previous systems.
Early voting will be available at seven sites from May 29 through June 2. Any registered voter from any of Burlington County’s 40 municipalities can vote at these locations during this period, unlike Election Day when voters must go to their assigned polling places.
Early voting sites include:
- Chesterfield Township Municipal Building
- Gibson House Community Center in Evesham
- Medford Town Hall
- Rowan College at Burlington County Student Success Center in Mount Laurel
- Pemberton Community Library
- Tabernacle Rescue Squad
- Willingboro Public Library
Registered voters who have requested or received a vote-by-mail (VBM) ballot cannot use machine voting but may cast provisional ballots instead. Vote-by-mail remains an option; ballots have been sent out upon request and further requests can be made until June 3 in person at the County Clerk’s Office.
Completed VBM ballots can be submitted via U.S. Post Office or placed in one of 28 secure drop boxes throughout Burlington County by June 4 at 8 PM.
For those casting ballots in-person on June 4, regular polling locations should be used. Information on finding polling sites is available online: https://www.nj.gov/state/elections/vote-polling-location.shtml.
