This year's Burlington County May Faire is set to transform Historic Smithville Park into a fantastical wonderland, inspired by the classic tale of Alice in Wonderland. The annual spring festival, scheduled for Sunday, May 19, promises an array of whimsical activities and games that are sure to captivate attendees of all ages.
Visitors will have the opportunity to interact with beloved characters from Lewis Carroll's iconic story, including the Mad Hatter, Cheshire Cat, White Rabbit, Queen of Hearts and Alice herself. These characters will be found roaming the park grounds throughout the free family-friendly event which commences at 11 AM and concludes at 4 PM.
"Hezekiah B. Smith founded Smithville as a company town in 1865, the same year that Lewis Carrol’s beloved children’s classic was first published, so we’re celebrating both the book and Smithville’s history during this year’s May Faire," said Burlington County Commissioner Director Felicia Hopson. "There will be games, music, historical displays, horse and carriage rides, old-time baseball games, tours, theatrical performances and more. History and fantasy will both come alive during this incredible event."
Hezekiah Smith was a prosperous inventor and entrepreneur who transformed Shreveville into a thriving industrial hub renowned for its production of woodworking machinery and the famed American Star Bicycle. The May Faire pays homage to this rich history while adding a dash of fantasy.
Visitors can look forward to engaging with naturalists from Burlington County Parks for tree education sessions followed by a special tea party with the Mad Hatter. Other activities include croquet with the Queen of Hearts outside Smithville Mansion and participation in a Giant Lawn Chess Game.
The event also features Disney’s Alice in Wonderland screening or live performances by Riddlesbrood Touring Theater. Attendees can enjoy historic arts and crafts demonstrations by artisans such as blacksmiths and soap makers alongside an old-time baseball game played by 1864 rules.
Additional highlights include food trucks, a beer garden, and performances by Bubbleverse, American Magic Lantern Theater and Horn’s Punch and Judy Show. The event is organized by Burlington County Parks with the support of the New Jersey Arts Council.
“Smithville is a beautiful destination all year long, but visitors will be amazed by what our Burlington County Parks staff have in store for May Faire,” added Burlington County Commissioner Allison Eckel, liaison to the Department of Resource Conservation and Parks. “The County event is a great way to explore all the park’s beauty and history while also enjoying a variety of free entertainment for all ages.”
