Residents who watched the recent total eclipse may now be wondering what to do with their eclipse glasses. The next eclipse over the United States isn't until 2044, but there's an opportunity for residents to donate their gently used glasses at the upcoming Burlington County Earth Fair.
Burlington County Commissioner Deputy Director Dan O’Connell, who watched the eclipse at a party hosted by the Burlington County Library System, encouraged residents to consider donating their eclipse glasses. He stated, "The eclipse was an exciting and memorable event for residents of all ages and we want to assist people in other destinations to safely experience the same wonder."
The collection at the Earth Fair on Sunday, April 21, at Historic Smithville Park will accept gently used and undamaged eclipse glasses for donation to Astronomers Without Borders. O’Connell highlighted the importance of these collections, mentioning, "Astronomers Without Borders and the Lion’s Club are great organizations and these collections will ensure that the glasses we collect are redistributed appropriately."
In addition to eclipse glasses, the event will also collect old prescription glasses, bifocals, readers, and sunglasses for donation to the Lion’s Club for redistribution to visually impaired residents. O’Connell emphasized that repurposing these items will help in saving space in the County landfill.
Apart from eyewear collections, the Earth Fair will also accept unwanted reusable bags, plastic film and bags, plastic flower pots, and small electronics. These items will be repurposed or donated to various causes to promote sustainability and environmental stewardship.
Commissioner Allison Eckel highlighted the Earth Fair's significance, stating, "Earth Fair is the place to learn more about our natural world and things we can do to keep our planet green and sustainable, while also having fun." The event will feature presentations, performances, activities, an artisan marketplace, a pop-up nature center, and more, catering to all members of the community.
