The Burlington County Commissioners honored retiring Sheriff Anthony Basantis and Burlington County Assistant Prosecutor Phil Aronow in recognition of their outstanding careers and service to county residents.
The recognitions were held during the Commissioners’ final meeting of 2022.
Sheriff Basantis is retiring after serving more than two decades in law enforcement, including 18 years with the Burlington County Sheriff's Department. He became the youngest elected Sheriff in county history, and under his leadership, the Sheriff’s Department became instrumental to the County’s COVID-19 response and the Department successfully expanded numerous community programs.
Aronow began serving as an Assistant Prosecutor with the Burlington County Prosecutor's Office in 1997. He served in the family and trial team units before joining the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office with the Organized Crime and Racketeering Bureau, where he was assigned to a new initiative focused on ID fraud and counter terrorism. He also helped design and implement training materials, programs and policies in various areas of law enforcement.
Aronow returned to Burlington County in 2017 as First Assistant Prosecutor and has helped lead and coordinate all personnel and administrative functions of the office, including its operations and transitions during the COVID-19 pandemic. He’s been actively involved with initiatives related to at-risk and disadvantaged youth, community justice and outreach, police officer resiliency, veterans and the Burlington County Police Chaplains program.
Both Basantis and Aronow are true public servants and Burlington County is a safer, better place because of their service. Congratulations and thank you to both.
