Virtua Health, a prominent healthcare provider based in Marlton, New Jersey, is pioneering the adoption of advanced robotic surgery technology. The health system is the first in the Eastern United States and second nationwide to implement the da Vinci 5 system across all relevant operating rooms. This transition is expected to be completed by early June.
John Matsinger, DO, MBA, executive vice president and chief operating officer for Virtua, commented on this development: “This milestone reflects our shared commitment to advancing minimally invasive surgery and delivering the best experiences and outcomes to our community.”
Virtua collaborated with Intuitive, the creators of the da Vinci 5 system, to establish a robotics program that meets their rigorous standards. Among the first 100 health systems to adopt this technology, Virtua will soon offer it throughout its applicable operating rooms.
Robotic-assisted surgery offers benefits such as smaller incisions and greater precision. These advantages can lead to faster recovery times, less postoperative pain, and fewer complications. The da Vinci systems are used for various soft-tissue surgeries including hernia repairs and thoracic procedures.
Craig Zaretsky, MD, chair of Virtua’s Department of Surgery noted: “As Intuitive releases more technology advances for the da Vinci 5 over the next few years, this standardization across our health system will position Virtua to seamlessly access these updates.” He added that each advancement enhances their ability to provide optimal patient care.
The collaboration with Intuitive also aims to expand robotic-surgery training opportunities for surgical residents at Virtua. This includes increased access to virtual reality simulators for skill development in a risk-free environment.
Since adopting robotic surgery in 2006, Virtua has conducted over 43,000 robotic-assisted operations. With more than 60 surgeons trained in the da Vinci system on staff, Virtua leads in robotic-assisted surgery volume within the Greater Philadelphia region.
