Burlington County is moving forward to enhance its network of regional trails, reviewing the feasibility of a 3.25-mile extension to the Kinkora Trail, funded by a $50,000 grant from the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission. This study will assess extending the trail from Mansfield Community Park to the Hedding section, eventually linking with the County’s Delaware River Heritage Trail through Florence, Mansfield, and Bordentown.
Burlington County Commissioner Deputy Director, Allison Eckel, expressed enthusiasm about the project, stating, “Burlington County already has one of the best trail networks in New Jersey with more than 50 miles of regional and interior parks trails, so we’re excited about this opportunity to further expand our system.”
The proposed extension will follow the historical Kinkora Railroad line, a pathway linked to World Wars I and II. This initiative aims to fulfill the plan of extending the trail along the former 13-mile railroad path through Mansfield, Springfield, and Pemberton Township.
Commissioner Randy Brolo elaborated on the benefits, noting, “The Kinkora Trail was one of the first additions to our County trail network and we’re excited to move forward with planning and design to extend it further through Mansfield.” Brolo emphasized that trails provide significant benefits to the community's quality of life and economic growth.
Burlington County has historically invested in its trails, completing multiple projects such as the Rancocas Creek Greenway Trail’s first 4-mile stretch and new segments of the Delaware River Heritage Trail. Plans are underway for even more expansions, including innovative routes across various townships.
Eckel highlighted Burlington County's role in maintaining outdoor spaces, stating, “Burlington County is a leader in preserving open space and we know the importance of having outdoor spaces that people of all ages can visit to relax, play, exercise and experience the beauty of our natural world and surroundings.”
