Burlington County’s Historic Smithville Park is set to host the annual May Faire festival on Sunday, May 18. This year’s event marks the 50th anniversary of Burlington County acquiring the historic site, which was once a bustling Victorian industrial town along the Rancocas Creek. The county transformed it into its first park.

The festival will embrace a Peter Pan theme, inspired by James Barrie’s classic tale. It promises family-friendly activities from 11 AM to 4 PM, with a special ceremony at 2 PM to commemorate the county’s acquisition and preservation of Smithville in 1975.

“Burlington County residents cherish both our county’s history and natural environment, and Smithville offers a unique blend of both,” said Burlington County Commissioner Deputy Director Allison Eckel. She emphasized the significance of celebrating Smithville’s history and the county’s efforts in preserving this unique location.

Originally known as Shreveville, Hezekiah B. Smith purchased and developed it into an industrial hub in 1865. The area was renowned for producing woodworking machines, the American Star Bicycle, and even hosted the world’s first bicycle railroad. In 1975, Burlington County acquired the village for over $595,000, preserving it as its first county park.

May Faire will offer entertainment such as theatrical performances of Peter Pan and interactions with characters like Peter Pan himself, Tinker Bell, Captain Hook, and others. Additional attractions include a screening of the silent film “Peter Pan” from 1924, magic shows, face painting, arts and crafts demonstrations, live music, horse carriage rides, and more.

The event is organized by the Burlington County Parks System with support from the New Jersey Arts Council. “Smithville is a beautiful destination all year long,” said Eckel. “Visitors will be amazed by what our Burlington County Parks staff have planned for May Faire.”
