Senator Andy Kim, currently representing New Jersey’s 3rd district in the U.S. Congress, posted a series of tweets on January 5, 2026, questioning the motivations behind fossil fuel companies and finance industry interests in Venezuela and critiquing the Trump administration’s stance on Venezuelan leadership.
In his first tweet, Kim raised concerns about business interests in Venezuela: “Are these fossil fuel companies looking at Venezuela – the country with the largest oil reserves in the world – as an opportunity to get a return on that investment? Are others in the finance industry looking to take advantage for their own profit, no matter the consequences?” (January 5, 2026).
He continued by questioning arguments put forth regarding anti-drug efforts in relation to U.S. policy toward Venezuela: “The argument that this is about stopping drugs is made weaker by the fact that the Trump administration is fine with VP Delcy Rodríguez and the rest of Maduro’s leadership staying in power. Trump previously called Maduro’s regime ‘narcoterrorists.’ 7/11” (January 5, 2026).
Kim further commented on priorities voiced by former President Donald Trump and Senator Marco Rubio: “Trump’s own press conference, which focused more on oil than drugs, and what we’ve seen from Rubio, shows this is less about combatting illegal drugs (most of which do not come from Venezuela) and more about power. Power and profit. 6/11” (January 5, 2026).
Andy Kim has served as a member of Congress since defeating Tom MacArthur in 2019. He was born in Boston in 1982 and currently resides in Moorestown. Kim holds degrees from Deep Springs College and the University of Chicago.
