The Burlington County Commissioners and Health Department introduced a new Mobile Health Vehicle on April 2 during the Rowan College at Burlington County Spring Into Good Health Fair. The vehicle is designed to bring health screenings, outreach, and other services directly to local communities.

The initiative aims to improve access to preventative care for residents across New Jersey’s largest county by area, which covers 827 square miles and includes more than 460,000 people according to the official website of Burlington County. The mobile unit is intended to reach vulnerable populations who may lack insurance or transportation.

Commissioner Randy Brolo said, “Burlington County is home to more than 460,000 people spread across 820 square miles. It’s our responsibility to protect our residents and ensure all communities have access to resources and services that promote good health and safety. This vehicle makes our Health Department better equipped to fulfill its mission and deliver critical services to vulnerable residents, regardless of whether they’re insured or have access to transportation.”

The Mobile Health Vehicle was acquired with a $538,730 appropriation added to the fiscal year 2024 State Budget through legislation sponsored by State Senator Troy Singleton and Assemblywoman Carol Murphy. It features two exam rooms, a registration area, bathroom facilities, wheelchair accessibility, climate control systems, running water for sinks, as well as refrigeration for vaccines and patient samples.

Dr. Holly Funkhouser Cucuzzella of the Burlington County Health Department said collaboration was key: “Collaboration is key to community health, and the Mobile Health Vehicle is an investment in preventative care and outreach that is proven to make a difference in health outcomes.”

Congressman Herb Conaway highlighted the importance of routine screenings: “The health screenings, outreach and other services the Mobile Health Vehicle will bring… can potentially be life saving for those who aren’t able to access routine medical checkups.”

Recent improvements include renovations at the Raphael Meadow Health Department Building in Westampton using part of a $6 million federal public health grant from state agencies. Last fall and winter saw over 920 flu vaccines administered along with nearly 3,200 free COVID/Flu test kits distributed; staff also tested over 600 patients for HIV/AIDS during late 2025.

Senator Singleton said he was proud of programs delivering vital resources “directly to vulnerable underserved populations who need them most.” Assemblywoman Andrea Katz commented on barriers faced by busy families: “This mobile unit is going to remove those barriers… Access matters. Convenience matters.” Assemblyman Balvir Singh added that having a traveling service means earlier diagnoses leading toward healthier communities.

Burlington County operates under a Board of County Commissioners comprising five at-large members with Eve Cullinan serving as county administrator according to its official website. The county encompasses three cities among its forty political subdivisions as reported by officials. Other notable features include Historic Smithville Park—a large site with forests—and recognition programs such as Outstanding Women of Burlington County awards according their website.

Looking ahead, county officials hope additional grant funding will allow further expansion so that the mobile unit can operate twice weekly at prescheduled locations throughout Burlington County.
