Burlington County officials are urging residents to support local agriculture by shopping at the county’s numerous farmers markets and farm stands during the remainder of the summer and fall seasons.
Commissioner Deputy Director Allison Eckel, who serves as liaison to the Department of Resource Conservation, Parks and Farmland Preservation, emphasized the county’s commitment to farmland preservation. “Burlington County is home to more than 67,000 acres of preserved farmland, which is the most of any county in New Jersey, and we continue to actively pursue the preservation of more of the remaining farmland and open space so that agriculture remains strong,” said Eckel. “At the same time, we’re also looking for additional ways we can help Burlington County farmers to succeed. One way is by encouraging residents to shop at farm stands or farm markets. Buying locally sourced fruits, vegetables, and other farm products is a healthy choice, and it helps keep agriculture a strong industry in our county.”
To promote this initiative, commissioners plan visits to various community farmers markets over the coming months. Commissioner Eckel began with a tour of Marlton Farmers Market alongside Evesham Mayor Jaclyn Veasy and Councilmembers Heather Cooper and Christian Smith.
The Marlton Farmers Market operates Wednesdays from 4 PM to 7 PM at Evesboro Downs Park through early September. The market features produce, baked goods, artisan items, food trucks, and hosts activities such as a water slide, petting zoo, magic show, Jeep show and more. On September 3rd there will be a cooking demonstration by a local chef.
Mayor Veasy commented on the market’s impact: “Evesham is gaining national attention as one of the most sought-after places to live in America because of attractions like the Marlton Farmers Market,” she said. “The market brings our residents together and helps support area farms and small business vendors. We’re wrapping up one of our best seasons yet, and we are excited the Burlington County Commissioners are helping to spotlight our market and others across the county.”
Councilman Smith noted how markets foster community spirit: “The Marlton Farmers Market is much more than just a place to shop. It’s become a gathering spot where families and friends can meet, interact and enjoy a summer evening outdoors,” he said. “There’s still one market day left this season and we’re hoping for a big turnout. If you haven’t visited yet, make sure to come out and discover all the great shopping and family fun.”
Councilwoman Cooper highlighted local involvement: “One of the things that makes Evesham such a great community is our residents’ support for local small businesses, and the market’s success reflects that,” she said. “Many of the market vendors live in town or nearby. They’re not just selling foods and products — they’re also interacting with their own neighbors and friends.”
In addition to site visits, Burlington County has updated its online directory listing over three dozen farmers markets throughout its communities; each entry provides names, locations, hours of operation as well as links for further information via its Business Resources section on its website.
Among those listed is the Burlington County Farmers Market, held Saturdays from 8:30 AM until 1 PM at 500 Centerton Road in Moorestown. This particular market was named best in New Jersey by American Farmland Trust’s annual poll in 2024—and recently ranked among USA Today’s four top markets nationwide.
Voting for American Farmland Trust’s 2025 poll has begun; supporters may cast votes for Burlington County Farmers Market or other area markets through this link.
Commissioner Eckel stated: “The Burlington County Farmers Market has received national attention as one of the best in America, but we know there are many other outstanding farmers markets in our county that we want to promote,” she said. “The directory is an excellent resource for residents to find new and convenient locations to buy their favorite Jersey Fresh foods and handcrafted creations.”
