Next week marks National Pollinator Week, a period dedicated to acknowledging the role of bees, butterflies, birds, and other pollinators in supporting plant life. In recognition of this event, the Burlington County Parks System has organized several activities aimed at educating residents about local pollinators and promoting ways to support them.

Burlington County Commissioner Deputy Director Allison Eckel emphasized the importance of these creatures: “Insects, birds, and other pollinators are critically important to our natural environment, farms and food supplies. In fact, an estimated 85% of all flowering plants on Earth are pollinated by insects and animals.” She encouraged residents to participate in the planned events as a way to learn more about these species while enjoying outdoor activities.

The scheduled events include:

– **Hummingbird Hangout**: Set for Monday, June 16 at Historic Smithville Park. Participants will learn about New Jersey’s native hummingbirds and how to attract them using feeders and natural plants. Although registration is full for this date, additional sessions are planned for July 25 and August 15.

– **Pollinator Walk and Talk**: On Tuesday, June 17 at the Burlington County Agricultural Center. A guided walk will provide insights into plants that draw specific pollinators.

– **Backyard Habitats**: Also on June 17 at the Agricultural Center. Principal Park Naturalist Jen Bulava will discuss creating backyard habitats that attract beneficial species while repelling pests naturally.

– **Pollinator Patch Discovery**: Scheduled for Thursday, June 19 at Crystal Lake Park. This event offers a detailed look at a specially planted garden designed to attract various pollinators.

All events require registration through the Burlington County Parks System but are free of charge. These activities form part of a broader range of summer programs offered by the parks system. Commissioner Eckel highlighted this diversity: “The Burlington County Parks System offers hundreds of different programs and events each year… No matter your age or interest, you can find an activity or event you and your family will enjoy.”

Further details on these programs can be found in the Burlington County Parks Summer Program Guide.
