Burlington County officials announced on Apr. 28 that the Main Branch Library in Westampton will undergo significant renovations, supported by $850,000 in federal funding secured by Congressman Herb Conaway. Conaway visited the library to present a ceremonial check and toured the area slated for updates.

The project aims to modernize an underutilized section of the Adult Services area by creating a new multipurpose “Learning Commons” space. This space is intended to support teaching, training, meetings, exhibits, remote work, independent study and social gatherings. The planned resources include a technology center with digital tools and audio/video lab facilities; collaborative work areas; individual study pods; a conference room; quiet lounges; and a Local History & Exhibit Room showcasing Burlington County history.

“The Burlington County Library is a stronghold of knowledge and an engine of opportunity that is open and accessible to all,” said Congressman Conaway. “This investment will help improve an underutilized area to create a new modern space for learning, collaboration, creation, and community. I am proud to deliver federal funding to advance a project that will help the library continue to meet both current and future needs.” Jonathan Chebra, Chair of the Burlington County Library Commission added: “Modern libraries are essential community spaces for gathering, creating and learning… The funding secured by Congressman Conaway and our other partners will be instrumental in helping us meet that objective.” Ranjna Das, Director of the Burlington County Library System said: “We envision the Learning Commons will be a dynamic space supported by library resources, tools, technology and expertise… We believe it will help narrow the digital divide, promote a culture of learning, and connect people to one another around shared interests.” Senator Troy Singleton also commented: “Residents use libraries for learning… I’m proud to support ongoing efforts to update and modernize Burlington County libraries so they can continue to meet residents’ needs.” Commissioner Randy Brolo stated: “Libraries are proven difference-makers… The renovations… are in line with national trends as libraries look to offer new learning opportunities.”

Renovation plans remain in early development stages but call for construction services from Burlington County’s Department of Public Works rather than outside contractors. Work is tentatively scheduled for 2027.

In addition to federal funds secured by Rep. Conaway, part of a $1 million state grant obtained by Senator Singleton in New Jersey’s FY 2023 State Budget will support improvements at BCLS facilities including Pemberton (recently completed), Cinnaminson (ongoing), Evesham (future), as well as Westampton’s Main Branch.

According to the official website, Burlington County features Historic Smithville Park spanning 312 acres with forests and wetlands. The county recognizes local women’s contributions through its Outstanding Women awards program according to its official website. It covers 827 square miles as New Jersey’s largest county according to its official website.

The purpose of the Burlington County Library System is enriching lives through opportunities for learning according to its official website.
